While the #MeToo movement has brought more awareness to the issue, violence against women is still a hidden global crisis that needs to be eradicated. It is an issue that knows no cultural or societal boundaries. Not only does it affect women’s overall well-being mentally, physically, and emotionally, but also prevents them from contributing to social, economic, and political developments in their communities.
I created this satirical, campy poster as an attempt to bring awareness to violence against women and victim-blaming culture. The poster, which is based on 1950s advertisements, is “targeted” toward perpetrators by giving a guide on how to avoid sexual assault. The design is not meant to convince perpetrators to not assault people. Instead, my intention for the poster is to make women feel validated with their frustrations that the burden is often placed on them to avoid sexual assault. It is meant to hold those who commit sexual assault accountable for their actions, rather than blaming the victim for not doing the “right” thing to prevent sexual assault
The text in this poster is inspired by this graphic courtesy of the Sexual Violence Centre Cork.
